Rekeying and replacing a lock are two different jobs. Knowing which you need can save time and money – and help you choose the right Singapore locksmith for the job.

What Is Rekeying?

Rekeying means changing the inside of the existing lock so that old keys no longer work and new keys are issued. The lock body and hardware usually stay; only the pins or cylinder are changed. It’s faster and often cheaper than a full replacement.

Good when:

  • You’ve lost a key and want to invalidate it.
  • You’ve just moved in (BTO, resale, rental) and want a new key that only you have.
  • You want the same look (same lock brand/style) but new key control.

What Is Replacing a Lock?

Replacing means removing the old lock and installing a new lock (and often new keys). You might do this when the lock is damaged, outdated, or you want to upgrade (e.g. to a digital lock).

Good when:

  • The lock is broken, rusty or unreliable.
  • You want to change the type of lock (e.g. traditional to digital).
  • The existing lock is low quality or hard to get parts for.

When to Call a Locksmith

  • Rekey – Any locksmith near me that offers rekeying can do it for your HDB main door, gate or letterbox. Ask for a quote per lock.
  • Replace – A Singapore locksmith or HDB locksmith can recommend a suitable new lock and install it. Get a fixed price for supply and installation.

If you’re unsure, describe your situation to a locksmith – they can tell you whether rekey or replace makes more sense for your lock and budget.
